New Exhibits in 2013 at the Newseum
WASHINGTON — This year will mark the milestone anniversaries of several key events in U.S. history, and the Newseum will debut new exhibits to highlight them.
Now open in the News Corporation News History Gallery, Level 5
Jailed in Birmingham
An exhibit featuring a casting of the original jail cell door in Birmingham, Ala., behind which Martin Luther King Jr. was confined after his arrest for leading nonviolent protests, and where he penned his famous "Letter from Birmingham Jail."
Now open on the Concourse, Level 6 and in the Big Screen Theater
JFK
Two new exhibits and an original documentary will explore the life and legacy of President John F. Kennedy through rare artifacts, intimate photographs and historic news coverage. "JFK" opens April 12 and includes:
- "Creating Camelot: The Kennedy Photography of Jacques Lowe," which features intimate, behind-the-scenes images of Kennedy, his wife, Jacqueline and their children.
- "Three Shots Were Fired," which tells the dramatic story of the news media's reporting of the tragedy through powerful artifacts, images and headlines.
- "A Thousand Days," a 16-minute Newseum-produced film that recounts the youthful glamour the Kennedy family brought to the White House and highlights newsworthy moments of a presidency cut short.

Make Some Noise: Civil Rights at 50
This new permanent exhibit recounts how Americans used their First Amendment freedoms to fight for equality and features newspaper coverage of milestone events in the civil rights era. A key artifact includes the lunch counter from F.W. Woolworth in Greensboro, N.C., where a group of students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College refused to leave their counter stools after being denied service in the "whites-only" section.
